About Richard Scheinberg

Richard Scheinberg, LCSW, is the founder of Sunrise Counseling Center and has dedicated more than four decades to helping individuals, families, and communities access compassionate, effective mental health care.

Mr. Scheinberg earned his Master of Social Work degree from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, in 1981. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York State and a Board-Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work through the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. He is also professionally certified in hypnotherapy in New York State.

After 12 years in private practice, Mr. Scheinberg founded Sunrise Counseling Center in 1993 in response to the growing need for accessible counseling services throughout Long Island. From its earliest days, his vision has been to create an organization where people can receive quality mental health care regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances. He also served as an executive board member of the Suffolk County chapter of the Society of Clinical Social Work from 1984 to 1995.

A Commitment to the Community

Under Mr. Scheinberg’s leadership, Sunrise Counseling Center has developed a longstanding commitment to collaboration and community-based care. Over the years, Sunrise has coordinated services with churches, schools, hospitals, colleges, special-needs programs, substance use programs, rehabilitation facilities, group homes, and other community organizations throughout the region.

This collaborative approach reflects Mr. Scheinberg’s belief that effective mental health care extends beyond the walls of a counseling office. Today, the collective experience and expertise of the Sunrise clinical team encompass a broad range of specialties, therapeutic approaches, and areas of need.

In 2012, Sunrise Counseling Center was honored as the “Best Agency” in New York State by the New York State chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. The organization was subsequently recognized at a special Long Island reception by local, state, and federal representatives, including then-U.S. Representative Steve Israel, New York State Assemblyman Philip Boyle, then-Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, Senator Lee Zeldin, and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi.

Trauma Treatment & Specialized Training

Mr. Scheinberg has continued to expand his clinical training throughout his career. He became trained and certified in the Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM) Protocol, an approach designed to help individuals process and reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories and post-traumatic stress.

He has also pursued specialized training in hypnosis and Past Life Regression through the Dr. Brian Weiss Institute. These interests reflect his broader commitment to exploring different approaches to personal growth, healing, and mind-body wellness.

Author, Speaker & Consultant

In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Scheinberg has served as a human resources specialist and consultant for community organizations, employee assistance programs, and managed care organizations. He continues to lead seminars and workshops locally and provides business consulting services outside of New York State.

His work and expertise have been featured in television, radio, and print media.

Mr. Scheinberg is also the author of two books: Turning Trauma into Triumph, which explores ways of reaching individuals who may be struggling silently and are hesitant to enter traditional psychotherapy, and Seeking Soul Mates, Spirit Guides and Past Lives, which explores spiritual and personal-growth themes.

The Sunrise Vision

What began as a vision to meet a growing need for counseling on Long Island has grown into a large, multidisciplinary mental health organization. Today, Sunrise Counseling Center includes more than 50 clinical practitioners and approximately 20 administrative staff members, serving thousands of individuals each month.

For Mr. Scheinberg, the heart of Sunrise has remained the same since its founding: to meet each person where they are, recognize their individual needs, and provide compassionate support on their path toward healing and greater peace of mind.
